Know if You’re Eligible for Medical Billing and Coding Scholarships

Medical billing and coding scholarships are available for students of every background, but you will usually have to compete for them against other students. Every scholarship is different, and you can take steps to increase your chances of receiving awards.

Applying well before the deadline is very important, both to be sure that your application is received and to show your genuine desire for it. You should be sure to follow all application instructions to the letter, and only apply for scholarships that you really qualify for. In addition, you should be aware that medical billing and coding students often qualify for scholarships from the allied health professions.

Find Medical billing and Coding Scholarships

You can find scholarships to help fund your traditional or online medical billing and coding degree in many ways. You can search online, although discerning which scholarships are best can be challenging. You can contact nearby colleges or universities you are interested in and inquire about scholarships and other opportunities; if you are already enrolled at a school, there is a financial aid office that can help you find other resources, such as work-study programs. Additionally, your employer may be willing to help you with tuition costs. There are a variety of scholarships available to students attending traditional schools or accredited online colleges for medical billing and coding. Below is a directory of scholarships that you may consider as you pursue traditional or online medical billing and coding courses.

Apply for National Medical Billing and Coding Scholarships

Some scholarships are available on a national level, regardless of your state of residency. Below are scholarships from two national organizations: The American Health Information and Management Association (AHIMA) and Health Information and Management Systems (HIMSS).

National Medical Billing and Coding Scholarships

Application deadline: 07/01

Amount awarded: $1,000

You must be a member of AHIMA and must be pursuing a degree (minimum 6 credit hours and 24 credits completed). You also must maintain a high GPA and complete an online application for this scholarship, which provides $1,000 for associate’s degree students in medical billing and coding.

Amount awarded: $1,500

You must be a member of AHIMA, pursuing a degree (minimum 6 credit hours and 24 credits completed), maintain a high GPA and complete an online application for this scholarship, which provides a $1,500 award for students majoring in health information management.

Application deadline: 10/01

Amount awarded: $5,000

You must be a member of HIMSS and be a junior-level bachelor’s student in health information or a related field when the scholarship is awarded. Those who have previously received the award are disqualified. The award includes an all-inclusive trip to the yearly HIMSS awards banquet.

Apply For Regional Medical Billing and Coding Scholarships

These scholarships are usually provided by local or state-based chapters of organizations such as AHIMA and HIMSS, and typically require you to be studying in a certain region of the United States. Some may also be available to you if you were born in, or are a recent resident of a particular area, even if you are studying outside of that area. Online colleges for medical billing and coding should generally be considered as existing where they keep their central offices, although you can contact the scholarship’s administrators if you want to find out whether you would qualify. One benefit of these scholarships is that competition is often not as intense as with national awards.

Offered by the New England chapter of HIMSS, this scholarship is available to third-year bachelor’s degree candidates in health information who are studying in, or are originally from, the New England area.

Amount awarded: $5,000

Available for students in New York schools, this scholarship is for bachelor’s students who show academic excellence and are in their junior year or later, and comes with an expense-paid trip to the HIMSS awards banquet.

Amount awarded: $5,000

Available for students studying in northern California, this scholarship provides funding for a bachelor’s-level student’s traditional or online medical billing and coding courses or other studies in health information management. Students must demonstrate academic achievement and leadership qualities for a career in health information management.

Amount awarded: $1,000

This award is available to any part- or full-time student in an accredited associate’s or bachelor’s degree program in New York. A short essay is required, which will be published in the NYHIMA journal; the award is given in June.

Amount awarded: $1,000

This scholarship is awarded to a New Jersey resident with a 3.0 GPA or higher who is taking medical coding courses online or traditionally toward a bachelor’s or associate’s degree. There are three separate awards, which are distributed in June.

Amount awarded: Variable

Several awards are available for GHIMA members reside in Georgia, keep a GPA over 3.0, participate in the association, or show leadership in a school environment. One $1,000 award (for bachelor’s and post-graduate students) and two $500 awards (for associate’s degree students) are available.

  • Houston Area HIMA Scholarship

Application deadline: 11/01

Amount awarded: $1,000

Available to students living in the Houston area who have kept up a 2.4 GPA through nine credits of medical billing online courses or their traditional equivalents, this scholarship is often overlooked, which may increase your chances of success.

Amount awarded: $500

If you are studying in Pennsylvania at an accredited school or certified independent study program, hold a 3.3 GPA or higher, and are a member of AHIMA, you are eligible to apply for this scholarship. The winner is recognized at the PHIMA annual meeting and luncheon.

 

Allied Health and Other Scholarships

These scholarships are typically offered to members of the allied health professional network, which is an umbrella under which important support services, like medical billing and coding, are classified. Many of these are very competitive due to their wide range of applicable candidates.

Amount awarded: $1,000

The Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions offers a scholarship to any student who is nominated by their school (which must be an ASAHP member) and is enrolled in a degree-granting program of any level.

Amount awarded: $4,000

This state-based scholarship offers any California resident student in the allied health professions a generous payment if they are willing to commit to a period of paid or volunteered work in an underserved area of California.
